We feed the world from Rotterdam
Should the global population reach 9.6 billion by 2050, the equivalent of almost three planets would be required to provide the natural resources needed to sustain current lifestyles. It is evident: the global food and agricultural system need a profound transformation. Especially because at the moment we are to nourish the 815 million people who are hungry and the additional 2 billion people expected to be undernourished by 2050. So one of the biggest challenges facing the world today is how to feed billions of people in the most sustainable way. Rotterdam takes the lead in this challenge by following the UN Sustainable Development Goals on Food, like 'Zero Hunger' and 'Responsible Production and Consumption'.
Rotterdam Food Cluster
Rotterdam takes its role in this global food issue very seriously. The entire Rotterdam region is a front runner in the worldwide food economy. With 8,000 food related businesses and an attractive location in the 'main port to Europe', the Rotterdam Food Cluster is unique in the world. Rotterdam Food Cluster stimulates employment opportunities, entrepreneurship, innovation and collaboration in the food sector of Rotterdam. Think of seed improvement, production, processing and research & development.
The Rotterdam Food Cluster organises projects in association with companies, knowledge institutions, interest groups and authorities, with the aim of job creation, innovation, knowledge sharing and marketing. Via our extensive network we bundle our strengths and create new initiatives with the Next Economy sustainable objectives as the starting point. We aim to continue to be the world's leading Food Region. Rotterdam Food Cluster is an initiative by the Department of Economics of the City of Rotterdam.
