New subsidy round for companies with smart sustainable solutions

3 March 2021

The Municipality of Rotterdam finances innovations that contribute to the energy transition

Five innovative companies have already started innovations in the city and port. From the 2nd of March until the 2nd of May 2021, new applicants can register for the second subsidy round of the Smart Energy Systems 2021 programme. They can apply for up to €100,000 to rapidly make their innovative energy solutions commercially viable. Registration for this round can be done via ondernemen010.nl/SES.

Rotterdam sets the bar high. We want to lead the way. A clean, reliable and robust energy system is part of our long-term strategy. SES2021 ensures that energy is made cleaner, smarter and more economical. It will also generate activity and employment in the Rotterdam region. Allowing us to continue to develop as an innovative city and region. In addition to a subsidy, SES2021 will also give the selected companies access to a network of partners and knowledge. In 2021, the Municipality wants to support a total of 15 to 20 initiatives. A budget is already available for 2022.

During the first subsidy round, the Municipality of Rotterdam selected five innovations from the sixteen submissions. These five companies are aiming for higher energy yields through wind, green hydrogen production, better utilisation of energy sources due to greater insight into the energy network, widespread use of small wind turbines in the built environment and smarter, more efficient use of heat networks.

In January, Vice Mayor Arno Bonte (Sustainability) visited the companies virtually. "By supporting innovative businesses who have already taken steps in the development of innovative energy solutions, we can accelerate the energy transition. The programme focuses on development and upscaling and therefore also serves as an economic stimulus to create new jobs.” Innovations by Rotterdam companies are also of major importance if Rotterdam wants to maintain its important economic position in the future.
